DEPARTING MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER THANK CITY FOR OPPORTUNITIES

Today Chula Vista says good-bye to two city leaders, having voted for a change.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting exiting Mayor Stephen C. Padilla and councilmember Patty Chavez made their closing statements as they thanked all who had helped them through their time at City Hall. Padilla kept his speech brief because he said the event should be about the city’s new leaders.

“Tonight is really about tomorrow and not about yesterday. And it really is about our new mayor elect (Cheryl Cox), councilmember elect (Rudy Chavez) and about our returning councilmember (John McCann),” Padilla said. “It really is your night and not mine.”

Padilla thanked the community of Chula Vista for all of the years of support and for what the community has given to him. Padilla said he was thankful for the four-year ride as mayor and that it isn’t always about getting the most votes.

“The journey frequently has more value then the destination… and that the victory is not always in the winning,” he said.

He choked up with emotion as he thanked his daughter for her support and for her patience the 12 years he has been away from her to serve Chula Vista. And he thanked his own father for all that he had given him.

Departing councilmember Patty Chavez told everyone that this wasn’t a good bye, but more of a “see you later.” Chavez spoke of the reasons why she applied for the city council and how she is thankful that she did.

“My husband very wisely noted that when we put ourselves outside of our comfort zones, we grow professionally and personally” Chavez said. “I applied because I wanted to do the job, to give back to our city, to solve issues and to build upon the continuous progress of our city.”

She thanked her neighbors for all their support and city staff for all its hard work. She also thanked her husband and children for all the sacrifices they made for her success as a member of the city council. She then thanked each of her four colleagues individually for their support and on helping her succeed.

Finally Chavez ended with some “words of wisdom” to all residents that “our representatives today and tomorrows need our support with constructive efforts for a sustainable city.”

Chavez said, “Your part-time council representatives have a full-time job for a growing city. Try as we may, there is no way to make everyone happy. I found that this job is about understanding and listening. You take all of these various ideas and beliefs and you bring them together and you study the complexities of how it is going to affect the entire city, then you make a decision and then you take this decision and you have the courage to stand by it.”
