SAN DIEGO COUNTY — October 28, 2026. San Diego County supervisors approved the next phase of the Safety Net Bridge Program on Tuesday, moving forward with an effort to support residents affected by changes to federal nutrition and health care benefits, according to the county’s October 27 announcement.
The action has relevance beyond the county government offices: the broader program already has a South Bay presence, with food distribution launched at the South Region Live Well Center in Chula Vista in August.
A bridge through interruptions in benefits
The county describes the initiative as short-term support for people experiencing a loss or interruption of CalFresh or Medi-Cal benefits. Planning documents have focused on connecting residents with primary care, medication, food and help navigating benefit enrollment.
Tuesday’s decision advances that effort. Residents should distinguish the newly approved phase from services already operating; approval alone does not mean every proposed service is available immediately.
Food assistance has already reached Chula Vista
County reporting said more than 500 people received food and resources at the program’s August launch in Chula Vista. A later county communications report, republished by The Alpine Sun on October 23, said the food distribution effort served more than 2,400 households at 16 events between August 8 and October 10.
That report also described plans to add six distribution locations this winter, with anticipated sites including National City and San Ysidro. Those were announced as planned additions, not confirmed operating locations.
Where residents can check for help
The county’s Federal Impacts Assistance Hub links to food distribution information, CalFresh and Medi-Cal resources, the ACCESS Call Center and Family Resource Centers. Residents can use those official channels to check current services and get assistance with their individual circumstances.
For Chula Vista and neighboring South Bay communities, the next practical questions are when additional services begin, where they will operate and how residents can access them.
