Chula Vista Elementary School District board members are pressing for answers about high temperatures aboard school buses, according to an October 14 report by KPBS.
During a September 9 board meeting, bus driver Sarah Ramos described a bus reaching 92.5°F despite open windows, an open roof hatch and fans. The district transports more than 1,600 students daily, according to previously published district figures cited by KPBS.
Why families are concerned
Heat aboard buses is a health and comfort issue for children and drivers, particularly during unusually hot weather. The report raises questions about vehicle cooling, how temperatures are measured, and what operational steps the district can take when conditions become unsafe.
ChulaVista.com previously covered a separate report involving a Hilltop High School student and a hot school bus. That incident involved the Sweetwater high school district, while the current board concerns involve the Chula Vista Elementary School District. They should not be conflated.
Residents can read KPBS’s October 14 reporting for the driver’s account and board discussion. We will follow the district’s response and any specific measures announced to protect students and employees.
