Roller hockey supporters plan to speak at Sweetwater board meeting
Parents, players and coaches are organizing ahead of tonight’s Sweetwater Union High School District board meeting after the district decided to stop funding its co-ed roller hockey program for the 2026–27 season.
The Star-News reported that families learned of the decision in an October 6 district bulletin. Supporters say the move came abruptly and without enough public discussion, and at least two petitions are circulating in an effort to preserve the program.
One petition had already gathered hundreds of signatures within days of the announcement, according to the local report.
A long-running South Bay program
Roller hockey has been part of the Sweetwater district athletic landscape for roughly 25 seasons. Eight schools fielded teams last season, and Eastlake High School finished 14-0 to win the Metro Conference championship.
The sport has also been unusual because it has included male and female students on the same teams. In recent seasons it operated as a district club sport after losing CIF sanctioning when participation outside the Sweetwater district declined.
Tonight’s meeting
Supporters are encouraging community members to attend the Sweetwater Union High School District board meeting tonight, Monday, October 12, at 6 p.m. at 1130 Fifth Avenue, Chula Vista. The local report says supporters plan to use public comment to ask the board to reconsider the decision.
A separate Metro Conference meeting is also scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at 8 a.m. at the district athletics office, according to the same report.
ChulaVista.com will watch for any action or formal response from the district following tonight’s meeting.
