Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Possible in Chula Vista Wednesday Night Into Thursday

CHULA VISTA, Oct. 20, 2026 — Chula Vista residents should keep an eye on the weather midweek, with the National Weather Service forecasting a sharp change from Tuesday’s mild conditions to potentially heavy rain and thunderstorms beginning Wednesday night.

For central Chula Vista, the National Weather Service says showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected after 11 p.m. Wednesday, with a 90% chance of precipitation. Another round of showers and possible thunderstorms is forecast Thursday, also with a 90% chance of precipitation.

What to expect

  • Tuesday: Mostly cloudy early, then gradually sunny, with a high near 76.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75.
  • Wednesday night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 p.m.; some storms could produce heavy rainfall.
  • Thursday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, high near 68, with southwest winds around 10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph.
  • Thursday night: A chance of lingering showers before conditions begin improving.

The forecast calls for roughly a quarter to a half inch of rain Wednesday night and another quarter to half inch Thursday in parts of the city. Exact totals will vary by neighborhood.

Why this matters in Chula Vista

After recent October rain, another period of heavier precipitation could affect low-lying roads, drainage areas and morning commutes. Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways and secure outdoor items before stronger gusts arrive.

The city has already been emphasizing winter-storm readiness this fall. Residents in flood-prone areas should make sure drains near their properties are clear and monitor official city and weather alerts as the system approaches.
