Gas leak prompts evacuations in Chula Vista

The leak was reported at a construction site around 9:15 a.m. on Third Avenue near Oxford Street

A worker digging at a construction site pierced a 1 1/2-inch-wide gas line in Chula Vista Wednesday morning, prompting evacuations of nearby businesses.

The leak was reported around 9:15 a.m. on Third Avenue near Oxford Street where a construction project is underway.

“Upon arrival we had a 1 1/2-inch broken and blowing gas line directly adjacent to the building in the construction site,” Chula Vista Battalion Chief Brendon Barahura told OnScene TV. “We evacuated the nearby businesses that are down wind and (called for) shelter in place for the apartment complexes… surrounding the site.”

Barahura said he didn’t know when the leak would be controlled.
