Shutting Down Vaping in Chula Vista

Chula Vista officially banned vaping on its city campuses, and now there are signs warning the public that anyone who violates the ordinance faces fines.

Changes to the city’s municipal code (Section 8.22) were expanded last year to prohibit smoking and vaping at all city facilities.

Now that signage is in place, people are being reminded that those caught violating the ordinance could face a fine of up to $100.

“We continue to look for ways to ensure all city facilities provide a healthy experience for visitors and employees,” said Stacey Kurz, coordinator for Healthy Chula Vista. “Reducing exposure to second hand smoke and educating the public about the dangers of new products in the industry are important to reduce smoking related chronic diseases, especially in our youth.”

In addition to the ordinance, the city is now able to accept vaping devices and cartridges at its Household Hazardous Waste collection facility or at one-day collection events.

According to Environmental Services Manager Manuel Medrano, “Both the cartridge containing the liquid for vaping devices and the lithium ion battery require disposal as a hazardous waste. We are happy to add this service to the existing disposal programs offered in Chula Vista.”
