Southwestern College football delivered one of the most dramatic wins of the season with a 44-42 triple-overtime victory over San Diego Mesa at DeVore Stadium.
Both teams entered the matchup unbeaten at 4-0, setting up a showdown between two highly ranked community-college programs. Southwestern entered ranked eighth in California and 14th nationally, while Mesa was ranked fourth in the state and seventh in the nation.
The game was tied repeatedly through regulation before moving into overtime. Southwestern ultimately secured the win in the third overtime period when Bobby Cameron caught the go-ahead two-point conversion and the Jaguars then broke up Mesa’s final attempt in the end zone.
The victory pushed Southwestern to 5-0 and moved the Jaguars to No. 3 in the state rankings. Mesa dropped to 4-1 and No. 6 in the state.
Southwestern quarterback Dominic Duran threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns, while Caleb Blocker rushed for 114 yards. Defensive back Valentino Wedderburn II recorded two interceptions, including a pick-six.
The Jaguars have a bye before hosting Palomar on Thursday, October 8.
